Our Last House

Hello and welcome!!

ISdsq7mhs0k0dk1000000000

We lived in this house for just over a year and a half, and in that time we definitely made decent strides in making the house our own. We originally purchased it as a blank slate of a new construction and while there were several areas that were less finished than others when we sold it (*coughcough*masterbathroom*ahem!*craftroom), we’re proud of how far we came in that short time. Here are some “before” pics (most of which were taken about 6 weeks after we moved in) and “after” shots.

Of note: The entire house was beige when we moved in.  Before the 6 week pics were taken, we’d already painted the foyer, hallway, living room, breakfast nook and kitchen a light grey called Dolphin Fin by Behr.  We’d also painted the laundry room with a nice, blue-grey oops paint.

So, without further adieu, let’s get started…

6 weeks in:  Front porch…

After: Front porch (We changed out the light fixture, created a DIY crate bench, and procured the doormat of my dreams. )…

6 weeks in:  Our foyer…

After:  Our foyer (We purchased a new rugrefinished the cabinets, and created a sweet DIY bamboo lantern light fixture.)…

6 weeks in: Our foyer, the other view…

After: Our foyer, the other view (All we did here was repurpose a mirror from the bedroom.  It definitely fits the space better scale-wise.) …

6 weeks in: Our hallway…

After: Our hallway (We added the frame collage and altered it.)…

That blank hallway wall shown two pics above, ultimately looked like this thanks to a simple art hanger project

6 weeks in: Our front room…

IMG_0600

After:  Our front room (First, we focused on function by transforming it into a tri-functional room. We painted the room a soothing taupe tone, performed an easy Ikea hack on the large cabinet, DIY’d alphabet art out of an old canvas, and restored a vintage table using mayonnaise.)   …

6 weeks in: Front room, the other side…

IMG_0601

After:  Front room, the other side (We started by flipping the layout when we acquired our Friheten Sofa.   With the desk on this wall, we incorporated my beloved mid-century desk chair and mounted our upgraded screen to the wall for increased flexibility.)…

6 weeks in: Living room, from hallway…

IMG_0626

After: Living room from hallway (Once we finally figured out a good layout for the space, we purchased a vintage coffee table off craigslist, painted the door a crisp charcoal, DIY’d some industrial succulent planters, and stained some basket cases to complete the look of this space.) …

6 Weeks in: Living room, towards breakfast nook…

6 Weeks In:  Living room, from breakfast nook…

After: Living room, from breakfast nook (For this space, we utilized some Lack floating shelves from Ikea to serve as a nice focal point to compliment the fireplace, and created a media cabinet from a cheapo thrift store find)…

(excuse the cutie with the blanket in the mirror… he was enjoying an episode of Miss Spider.  🙂 )

6 weeks in:  Living room from sofa…

After: Living room from sofa (The main addition to this wall is the assymetrical frame wall.   You can find a tutorial on how this came to be in this post) …

6 weeks in: Dining nook…

After: Dining nook (The dining nook got a colorful splash of artwork (from Kirklands), some Vivian curtain panels, as well as my totally revamped $8 craigslist chairs.   Check out how I refinished and reupholstered them.) …

6 weeks in: Kitchen…

After: Kitchen (Aside from accesorizing, not alot changed in the kitchen except for a DIY wine nook that we added next to the refrigerator (second pic below).) …

6 weeks in: Our Master…

After: Our Master (We painted the walls Driftwood Grey by Glidden, added a quadrefoil mirror, some curtains, a pair of grown up nightstands and a DIY Target-inspired bench (second pic below))…

Previous: Master bedroom, the other view  (Sorry, no 6 week pic here… this was after paint and some accessorizing)…

Welcome!!!!!

After: Master bedroom, the other view (We replaced the tall-boy with a low mid-century dresser, added some large-scale art, and painted the dated wicker chair in the corner for a fresh, open look.)…

6 weeks in: Master Bath…

After: Master bath (We painted the walls Driftwood Grey by Glidden and accessorized.)…

6 weeks in: Master toilet room…

IMG_0642

After: Master toilet room (After painting, we added some custom DIY shelves for storage and style.)…

6 weeks in: Lucas’s room…

IMG_0637

After:  Lucas’s room (We painted the walls a rich navy tone, rearranged the space so that it flows much better, added a DIY map side table, some memorable Rubicks cube art, curtains and accessories.)…

6 weeks in: Lucas’s room, the other side…

IMG_0638

After: Lucas’s room, the other side (We added some Expedit shelves with a splash of green behind them as well as some additional shelves between to bridge the space and add more storage)…

IMG_6229

6 weeks in:   No Man’s Land (aka. Our spare room)…

Then, it got this bad…

IMG_6132

After: No Man’s Land… Now, Craft Room!  (I added a table and rearranged the space to make it more functional. I wish I could’ve gotten farther in this room… it feels unfinished with the beige builder’s paint, and somewhat mismatched furnishings, but it’s definitely far from where it started functionality-wise.  And that’s something.)

6 weeks in:  Guest bath….

IMG_3096

After: Guest bath (we replaced our lighting fixture, framed and white-washed our mirror, painted the room a soft aqua, converted a thrift store bread-box into toilet paper storage, and changed out the art above the toilet.)…

6 weeks in: Guest bath:

After: Guest bath (We painted our tile bath surround for a budget-friendly refresher and DIYed and grommeted extra-long curtains)…

6 weeks in: Guest bath, other view…

After: Guest bath, other view (Here, we installed a wire basket, removed the side-splash and added some personal artwork.)…

IMG_5211

6 weeks in: Laundry/mudroom (We’d already painted it a grey-blue color in these pics)…

After: Laundry/mudroom (We DIY’d some additional shelves above the washer, so that (ahem!) I could reach them (Imshort).  Then, I organized the space and revamped the shelf decor/storage using several inexpensive methods.)…

Before (this is a true before): Backyard…

  2. Niiice!! …it’s really inviting and homey/cozy looking. you have a really good eye and nice taste. so you wanna come makeover my home for me? 😉 seriously, I get overwhelmed and don’t know where to start? sighh

    • Aw, thanks! I definitely have had rooms like that. I’ve found that starting with something I love and stemming off of that has worked for me. Like our master started with the bedspread, then I chose paint and curtains and stuff. I think getting started is the hardest part. 🙂

  3. Hi Christina! The house looks amazing… you’re doing a wonderful job and I am loving your blog.
I have a question… how the heck did you add the additional pages on here?? (Our home, etc) I cannot figure it out and it’s making me insane.
I want to add a home tour as well. Any help would be appreciated!!!
